
The Parliamentary Select Committee on Environment, Science and Technology has concluded its field visit to mining companies and communities in the Ashanti and Ahafo Regions. The Committee called on all mining companies to live up to their responsibilities.The Committee observed that illegal mining was a threat to the society and called on Government to increase budget allocations to the agencies responsible to curb the menace. Asanko Gold Mines was the last to be visited after AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Gold Mine and Newmont Ghana in Ahafo South.The Committee expressed appreciation and satisfaction to the Companies for their safety protocols concerning the environment, water bodies and the forest reserve areas as well as the Tailing Storage Facility (TSF) Dams sites.The Committee, however, expressed concern about the company’s inability to provide a policy document to mitigate climate change issues in the Communities should they occur.
