Committee on Environment ,Science and Technology Visits Newmont Ghana

The Select Committee on Environment ,Science and Technology has paid a working visit to Newmont Ghana in the Ahafo Region.The leader of the delegation, Hon.Prof.Hamza Adam, stressed that the visit forms part of the oversight responsibilities of the committee to ensure that the environment is safeguarded and human health is protected. According to him, reducing carbon emissions is beneficial for sustainable livelihoods in the community and the protection of natural resources."A policy document is being developed by the Minerals Commission for all mining concessions to adopt and have a comprehensive and structured alternative livelihood for the host communities” he noted.The General Manager of Newmont Ghana, Mr. Samuel Noi thanked the Committee for the visit and said the company adheres strictly to the environmental safety protocols inline with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)and other regulatory bodies in the country. He also emphasised that, the company was adjudged the best mining performance award and the first runner up on best environmental management of the year 2024. He however, appealed to the Committee to advocate on their behalf to deal with challenges such as illegal mining ,bush fires, vandalism and demonstrations which are major threats to the company. The Vice Chairman of the Committee, Hon.John Darko, MP for Suame Constituency in the Ashanti Region indicated that the Committee was satisfied with the safety measures and protocols put in place after a tour of the facility.
