The Parliamentary Select Committee on Science and Technology has embarked on a three-day working visit to the AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Gold Mine as part of its oversight responsibilities. The Ranking Member and Leader of the delegation, Hon. Prof. Hamza Adam, said the visit is a fact-finding mission aimed at examining the mine’s Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and assessing compliance with existing environmental regulations. According to him, the Committee is particularly interested in compliance with Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 246, noting that several water bodies in mining areas have been seriously affected.Prof. Hamza Adam stressed that Parliament has the authority to recommend the suspension or revocation of licences where violations are established. Samuel Pope, introduced his management team and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to environmental protection. He stated that environmental sustainability remains a top priority for the company, adding that AngloGold Ashanti operates in strict compliance with the requirements of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Minerals Commission, and the Lands Commission, while also adhering to international best practices.
