SHS 3-YEAR ENROLMENT PROGRAMME TO COMMENCE IN SEPTEMBER

The Minister for Education, Hon. Alex Tettey-Enyo, said today before Parliament that the Senior High School enrolment for the 3-year Programme would commence in September, this year.

He was answering a question asked on behalf of the Member for Asunafo North, Hon. Robert Sarfo-Mensah who sought to know from the Minister the cost and outcome of the National Education Forum, organized by the Ministry of Education in 2009 to deliberate on the length of the Senior High school Education.

Hon. Tettey-Enyo added that the outcome of the forum has been communicated in a memorandum to Cabinet for policy approval for the reversal of the duration of the Senior high school education from 4 years to 3 years.

He also revealed that a total amount of GHC 53,667 was spent on the organization of the forum to cover all expenses.

A supplementary question posed by the Minority Leader, Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, questioned why the Government should charge the Ministry of Education to organize a stakeholders’ forum to deliberate on the length of the Senior High school Education when it is already stated in its Party Manifesto that upon assuming office it shall revert the period of the Senior High School Education system from 4 years to 3 years.

The Minority Leader chastises that the stakeholders’ forum was not necessary because Government could have gone ahead with its plans as per its manifesto.

The Minister countered by explaining that it was necessary to have organized the forum since the opinions of the stakeholders were important.
