MAKE MINING LAW FLEXIBLE.
The MP for Amenfi East, Hon. Joseph Boahen Aidoo suggested today in Parliament that the Mining Law be made flexible to distinguish between small scale mining and galamsey (illegal mining). He said the difference between the two is the licensing procedures and the law except the mode of operations and the scale which are the same. He urged government to support small scale mining with funds, technical advice, equipment and training. The MP was making a statement on small scale mining and illegal mining.
The MP for Buem, Henry Ford Kamel who contributed to the statement, enumerated some efforts made by Government to support the mining operators. He said credit schemes have been made available to support their financial activities and, therefore urged the galamsey operators to use legal and designated lands for their mining activities.
He also pleaded with them to be more patient so that they can benefit from opportunities Government has set up for them.
He however cautioned land owners and traditional leaders to desist from permitting mining operators to use their lands unlawfully for galamsey activities.
The Minister for Women and Children’s Affairs and MP for North Dayi, Hon. Akua Sena Dansua who also contributed to the motion, blamed the recent tragedy in Dompuase that claimed the lives of 13 women galamsey operators, on the irresponsibility of men who refuse to cater for their families; leaving the huge burden on the women. This, she added, has compelled most women to engage in such dangerous jobs to keep the family.
Sitting resumes tomorrow.
