GOVERNMENT TO SUPPORT JUDGES TO UNDERTAKE POSTGRADUATE STUDIES

08/07/10 Earlier, the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Mrs. Betty Mould-Iddrisu informed the House of Government’s readiness to support judges to undertake postgraduate studies depending on the availability of funds and sponsorship.
She noted that sitting judges who demonstrated enormous potential will be provided with opportunities to undertake post graduate studies in specialized fields with sponsorship from Donor Agencies or the Government.

Mrs. Mould-Iddrisu was responding to a question filed by Hon. Kwasi Ameyaw-Cheremeh, MP for Sunyani East who wanted to know when sitting judges who qualify to be sponsored to undertake post-graduate studies in specialized field will benefit from the scheme “study leave with pay”.
In 2008, two judges, Justice Samuel Marful-Sau and Judge Georgina Mensah-Datsa, an Appeal Court Judge and a Circuit Court Judge respectively were sponsored by the GetFund to undertake a Master’s Degree Programme in Petroleum Law and Policy at the University of Dundee in Scotland.

Later, the MP for Offinso North, Hon. Augustine Collins Ntim asked the Minister when her Ministry will provide the newly created Offinso North district with a District Court.
She intimated that the Local Government Act clearly assigns the responsibility of ensuring ‘ready access to Courts in the District for the promotion of justice ‘to the Municipal and Metropolitan Assemblies.

This she added includes the provision of courthouses and residential accommodation for the Magistrates.
The Attorney-General however said the Judicial Service is ready to establish a District Court at Akumadan, the district capital of the newly created Offinso North District when a courthouse and accommodation are made available to the Service.
