FULANI HERDSMEN CAUSE HAVOC IN THE NORTHERN REGION

The MP for Bole/Bamboi Joseph Akati Saaka said the scourge of the Fulani herdsmen has reared its ugly head in the Bole/Bamboi Constituency saying their invasion has caused 85% of the degradation of the Southern Savanna grassland through overgrazing. He registered these frustrations in a statement read on the floor of Parliament.

Hon. Saaka was worried that farm owners are gradually losing their farms to overgrazing. He complained, ‘these poor farmers’ farmlands are vandalized and water sources get polluted by these cattle. The cattle defecate into the water and the villagers dare complain’.

The MP for Mion, Dr. Ahmed Yakubu Alhassan who contributed to the statement added that these cattle continue to destroy farming areas not only in Bole/Bamboi but other parts of the Northern Region saying ‘farmers are abused by the Fulani herdsmen when they try to drive these animals away’.

He therefore called for a national debate to strategize and reduce the influx of these Fulani herdsmen in the country.

The MP for Effutu, Hon. K.T Hammond was worried at the low level of attention the Security Services were giving to this matter stressing ‘this issue has security implications and needs maximum attention’.
